Freedom of Information Request

The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is the main state law that addresses citizens' access to public records that are created, compiled, or kept by government bodies. The idea behind the act is to enable citizens to obtain information about the workings of government - the purpose of which is to serve the public good. From the act: "Such access is necessary to enable the people to fulfill their duties of discussing public issues fully and freely, making informed political judgments and monitoring government to ensure that it is being conducted in the public interest."
